Hinge prompts: what a good answer actually does
A good answer is specific, true, and easy to reply to. Copy-pasted answers fail on all 3, which is why lists of best prompts do not work.

Hinge asks for 3 prompt answers, with about 150 characters each. That is 3 short chances to sound like one person rather than any man.
The 3 jobs
- 01Specific: it contains a detail that could only come from your life. A place, a number, a name, an hour of the day.
- 02True: you can talk about it for 5 minutes on a first date without effort, because it happened.
- 03Answerable: it hands her an obvious thing to say back. If the only reply is a compliment, the answer failed.
The 5 patterns that kill an answer
- 01
The copy-paste
The costShe has read it 40 times this month. It tells her you did no work.
The fixTake the same joke and put your own street, job or Tuesday into it.
- 02
The generic virtue
The costTravel, food, laughing, adventure. Every man says these, so they carry no information.
The fixName 1 country and 1 thing that went wrong there. Name the dish, not the cuisine.
- 03
The unanswerable
The costA closed statement leaves her nothing to type. So she types nothing.
The fixEnd on a detail she can pick up, or a small question with a real answer.
- 04
The list of requirements
The costRules about who should not swipe on you read as a warning, and she takes it.
The fixDelete every sentence about what you do not want. All of them.
- 05
The self-deprecating opener
The costUndercutting yourself in the first line asks her to argue you up. She will not.
The fixSay the true thing without the apology attached to it.
Before and after
| Prompt | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| PromptTwo truths and a lie | BeforeI have been to 12 countries, I can cook, I hate coriander | AfterI have broken 2 bones in Portugal, I make a good carbonara, I once got locked in a museum |
| PromptI go crazy for | BeforeGood food and good company | AfterThe 07:00 bakery run on Aigburth Road, before anyone else is awake |
| PromptMy simple pleasures | BeforeSunsets, dogs, coffee | AfterSanding something in the garage with the radio on, and any dog that leans on me |
The after column is not better writing. It is the same life with the specifics left in.
